So your stuck? You’re in a can’t be bothered, shoulda’, coulda’ woulda’ didn’t funk. You woke up this morning with the best intentions but ANOTHER day is coming to a close and you STILL haven’t done that ‘thing’ you have promised yourself 1000 times over you were going to do. And now you feel the shame creeping in.
But don’t waste your energy beating yourself up. Because EVERYONE has lacked motivation at some stage. And gaining that momentum back may be easier than you think.
Here are some simple strategies to get your mojo back and start creating the life of your dreams.
know your why
“When the why is clear, the how is easy” ~ unknown
From a young age I have known two thing. One was that I want to have as much FUN as I can on this beautiful Earth while I am here. The other is that I have a deep seated need to HELP people. I know that if I don’t look after my own mind, body and soul first, I cannot do what I believe I was put on this mother ship to do. I simply cannot pour from an empty cup. That is my why. YOU are my why. It makes any decision easy because I know what is good for ME is good for YOU. And if I want to help YOU I have to help ME first.
When you have clarity around your why, it makes any decision much more simple. What do you value? Is it your family? Your career? Your relationships? Make it bigger than yourself.
Link your goals around your values, your inspiration and watch the magic unfold.
Your goal: To exercise 5x a week
You value: Relationships
Your why: ‘It is important to me to workout 5x a week because if I don’t exercise I feel sluggish and grumpy. As a result, I cannot show up as my best self, and my relationship suffers’
kill your idea
“Remember that failure is an event, not a person” ~ Zig Ziglar
In the Ted Talk “The Unexpected benefits of celebrating failure” Astro Teller speaks about how his team seeks to solve the world’s biggest problems through finding ways their ideas will fail.
Say you want to eat better, reduce coffee, drink more water etc. But you know yourself. You know that you have a tendency to get to bed late because you get lost in your phone watching funny videos of cats (We have all been there). By the time morning comes you’re tired. You hit snooze one too many times, wake up late and have to run out the door with only a coffee in hand for breaky. By the time 12pm hits you are starving and the cascade event of bad food choices commences.
But, you can preempt your failures and down falls. You can put strategies in place to minimise the risk of failure. It may be as simple as putting your phone in another room after 9pm, and getting an old school alarm clock instead.

Enlist in help. Tell everyone and anyone what you are trying to achieve. Get people who care about you to join you on your health journey. Invest in a coach. Get a gym buddy. Whatever you need to do to keep accountable. If a friend keeps bringing you cake, ask them kindly to reframe from showing their love with sugary health bombs and suggest a walk and green smoothie instead.
One of the best things you can do for myself, is choose a partner in crime to go in the trenches with. Want to do a juice cleanse? Run a marathon? Quit sugar? Find a buddy to do it with you!
reduce decision fatigue
“If it was up to me, it wouldn’t be up to me” ~ Unknown
Decision fatigue refers to the deteriorating quality of decisions made by an individual, after a long session of decision making. To put it simply, the less choices you have to make during the day, the better choices you will make about the important things.
This may be as simple as laying your clothes out the night before so you don’t have to decide what to wear, or enrolling yourself in a fitness class where the workout is decided for you. That way, when you need to make hard health choices like “should I choose the S’morse flavoured donut or the raw ball?” You have willpower on your side.
So there you have it, 4 little tips that will make a huge difference when it comes to motivation.
